They're all fairly easy to parse, fairly easy to write, and there's precedent for most of them, so it's not too big an issue. There is, btw, a shell based implementation of an fstab-esque ifup/down scripty thing about. Check for posts by Christian Hammers on this list about two months ago. It gets the basics right, but has some issues with routes and roving profiles that the `above' might be better for.
