Um, bad dependencies, miscompiling, program bugs . . .
Actually, you're right. They aren't bumping the soname, for various
reason having to do with this being alpha and beta software. Any stable
release won't have this problem. Slink alone doesn't have this problem.
It's possible that this could have been avoided by use of versioned
depends. Needless to say, potato won't have this problem when it's
released, as it will either have 1.0 or at least a inter-stable set of
packages.
