Well, but sometimes packages have many upstream authors.
Putting it in description would imply very long description.
I'm happy with way how copyright information is maintained already.
/usr/share/doc/*/copyright is a good place for it.
But very often I would like to quickly check upstream homepage of the
package... Take a look at
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/utils/makeself
It's just very useful, and `apt-cache show makeself` too.
Copyright notes won't be so useful. I mean, I agree that this information
is important, but it's important for people who are interested in it.
URLs of homepages would be probably useful for everyone.

That's what Developer's Reference says about Homepage in description[1]:
Note that we expect this field will eventually be replaced by a proper
debian/control field understood by dpkg and packages.debian.org. If you
don't want to bother migrating the home page from the description to
this field, you should probably wait until that is available.
I found bugreport[2] regarding this, but seems that noone works on it at
the moment.
What about changing policy to demand Homepage in packages' description?
This would be probably the simplest solution.
packages.debian.org is showing those URLs fine already.
