removal of package directories on purge, and mount points

I know there's been recent discussion regarding package removal and what
packages should and should not remove when they are purged. IIRC, one
suggestion was to use rmdir along with the --ignore-fail-on-non-empty
option to remove directories only if they were empty. However, using
this will fail if the directory in question is a mount point[1].

Is there some graceful way around this?
