I've spent a whole afternoon trying to have viewports in sawfish 1.x
with gnome2. I've searched the web and found only e-mails telling there
are no more viewports. In the configuration menu of sawfish 1.x there
are no viewports anymore. I've looked the documentation of librep and
sawfish-dev, and found no function to just move one viewport down or
create a viewport (set the number of viewports).

So I've assumed that there are no viewports in sawfish 1.x and gnome2.
If you can tell me how to enable those, and/or where it's documented, I
apologize for the waste of time and am going to download the latest
version of gnome2 ;)
