Sorry, i don't have time to do the first one (which should be as easy as
tweaking a few Makefiles...) because i'm preparing for some exams.

Feel free to NMU.

It should be quite easy to resolve (GCC flags need to be set properly,
the library is missing -fPIC in the right places) - but don't try to
use autoconf on ming, it just won't work...
If you know much about autoconf/automake you probably could also create
proper Makefile.am files etc. and contribute them upstream.
