Er. Lots of people use precompiled kernels with most commonly-used
features in them, including devfs. Not using them generally shouldn't
break things.
It'd probably be a lot more straightforward to move mtab out of /etc
than to try to make /proc/mounts act like it. That's still difficult,
though; it's been discussed here before. It *would* be nice to get
/etc/ to be completely readonly; as far as I know, the only reason mtab
is still in there is because /etc is guaranteed to be on the root fs,
and /var isn't.
(I'd think discussing the idea of making /proc/mounts a suitable
replacement for /etc/mtab would be better done on l-k, though.)
