marcus@ulysses[1]:~$ bash
marcus@ulysses[0]:~$ exec login
No utmp entry. You must exec "login" from the lowest level "sh"

Cheating doesn't work ;) Well, exec login is replacing the current shell with
the login program. I know that this works already in my personal lowest
level shell: I can simply logout of it, and the login program will automatically
be respawned. Is "exec login" actually useful? Apart from running your own
login program instead the system default (in case they are different)?

Here is what happens on the Hurd (I use loginpr, because that
provides only a small prompt rather than a full blown login
shell, but it works the same for both):

foobar@drizzt:/tmp$ bash
foobar@drizzt:/tmp$ loginpr
login: marcus
Password:

marcus@drizzt:~$ logout
foobar@drizzt:/tmp$ exit
foobar@drizzt:/tmp$

Thanks,
