erm. i have no idea what packages compose ``office-type work'' but here
is a list of some of the things i find on debain2.2r5 disk 1:

tetex-base_1.0-10, tetex-extra_1.0-10, (lots of other TeX stuff too)
wmaker_0.61.1-4.1, sawmill_0.20.1-2.1, (more WM's available)
xserver-common_3.3.6-11potato32, (lots of other xservers also),
vim_5.6.070-1, xemacs21-bin_21.1.10-5, emacs20_20.7-2,
fetchmail_5.3.3-3, mutt_1.2.5-5, gnumeric_0.47-1, gnuplot_3.7.1p1-4,
abiword_0.7.7, gnome-card-games_1.0.51-6 (this should have that
all-important solitaire), gimp1.1_1.1.17-3, xmms_1.0.1-2,

there are lots more. i think the answer to your question is: yes.

again, on debain2.2r5 disk 1:

apache-common_1.3.9-14, apache-perl_1.3.9-13.1-1.21.20000309-1,
apache_1.3.9-14, php4_4.0.3pl1-0potato2, bind_8.2.3-0.potato.1,
openldapd_1.2.12-1, postgresql_6.5.3-27, postgresql-client_6.5.3-27,
mysql-client_3.22.32-6, mysql-server_3.22.32-6,

there are lots more. i think the answer to your question is: yes.

undoubtedly true. however, for servers, chances are they are connected
to the net. you can apt-get or dselect more things as required. personal
workstations (like home systems) may not be.

the point is: you only _need_ the first CD. if you are installing Red
Hat, and you burn only the first disk, you will never get it installed.
it will demand that second disk.
