Re: forking packages and private archive

There's nothing mysterious about creating your own APT archive. See
the manual file for 'apt-ftparchive' to create Packages and Sources files.
As for the Release file, it is absurdly simple to create by hand. Copy
one as an example if you wish, and modify it appropriately. As for
the modification, you may want to consult information on how to conduct
'pinning' so that APT chooses which version of the package you want based
on your criteria. See the manual page 'apt_preferences' and also consult
the 'apt-howto' package.

Note that pinning is a feature of APT v0.5 and up, available in woody but
not potato.
