whoops, I forgot it could have been fixed already. so aptitude runs
now, but still doesn't seem usable, the list of packages is almost
empty, the upgrade does not work work (I just did apt-get update &&
apt-get dist-upgrade, so basically it should just say there's nothing to
update or something like that).

here's the list of all installed packages according to aptitude:

here's what is says when I hit g:

lqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqk
    x Apt

xE: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

xE: Unable to correct dependencies, some packages cannot be

mqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqj

it's true that some of the packages are held, but why wouldn't it show
them? I mean that's why I want to use apt to be able to fix these
problems, not to tell me there's a problem. It used to work, long time
ago, it would show the packages (installed, removed, held etc.) and I
could change the status, see why they are held etc. what am I missing? I
mean it's completely unusable for quite some time (even before this
'packages are held' problem).

  TIA
