For what it's worth, I am also having huge problems with fonts and
i18n in the latest unstable X.

Tons of these in ~/.xsession-errors:

Qt: missing charset ISO8859-1
Qt: missing charset ISO8859-1
Qt: missing charset ISO8859-1

Japanese fonts bring X to 100% CPU and the system falls down pretty
quickly, as well.
