That's what I get for making assumptions and using the wrong tests to verify them. ;-) That's also what I get for listening to my coworker. ;-) Here's where the assumption came from (README) e3's assembler version is primary available on Linux. FreeBSD and BeOS are also possible, but there are also GNU-C-written versions for non-i386-Unix platforms (e3.c, included again) and for 16-bit DOS (not anymore included). This README doesn't further care about e3.c. (Just make it!) So, it's available, but just not being built in the Debian package.
