You must have recently upgraded and not read the warning issued by binutils:

    NOTE: The "-oformat" option for ld has changed to "--oformat".
    This affects building kernels on i386 and possibly other
    architectures.  Please check arch/<your arch>/boot/Makefile
    in your kernel source and be sure to replace any instances
    of "-oformat" with "--oformat".

    Upstream kernel changes are already taking place for this
    modification.
