libfreetype6: [Bug#78982: Package name is highly confusing and problematic]

What should I do?  :-)

I am the maintainer of the FreeType Debian packages. There has been
suggestion to rename freetype2 (FreeType 1.3.1) to libttf2, which is
actually the right thing to do since FreeType 1.3.1's library is called
/usr/lib/libttf.so.2.2.0. However, AFAIK, dpkg does not yet support
versioned dependency and yet many packages have versioned dependency on
freetype2 (>= 1.3.1).

Cheers,

Anthony

Severity: normal

I realize that Debian policy mandates the use of sonames in package names,
and that the confusion about freetype package names isn't any of your fault;
however, in my work on the Berlin project (http://www.berlin-consortium.org),
we require Freetype 2, and receive reports almost every day about people
having compilation problems or just general confusion because they assume
the freetype2 package actually contains Freetype 2. Would it be possible to
reduce our work and the users' confusion by changing the names to something
more intuitive?
Eg, freetype2 -> freetype1-2
    libfreetype6 -> freetype2-6
or somesuch. Berlin has far too many odd and unpackaged dependencies as it
is; it would really help us out if something could be done to clarify the
situation with the debian packages.
