Bug#637343: desktop-base: Default Debian background reported as 'missing' but it is not

Package: desktop-base
Version: 6.0.6
Severity: important

I rebooted this morning and noticed there was no background
on the gdm signon screen (just grey), then when the gnome desktop
came up everything was green instead of the nice space swirls. When
I checked in Preferences/Appearance the background setting said
'Debian image missing' but the link
'/usr/share/images/desktop-base/desktop-background' pointed to
'/etc/alternatives/desktop-background' which points to
'/usr/share/images/desktop-base/spacefun-wallpaper.svg' which
is on my system:

240 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 240803 Feb 19 13:31 /usr/share/images/desktop-base/spacefun-wallpaper.svg

A reinstall of the 'desktop-base' package did not fix the problem.
Nothing pertaining to this problem appears in .xsession-errors.
On another machine with this same setup, the background is present
in an Xvnc session and in the real desktop (screen :0).
