There are some programs which get confused by this (mutt for certain and
maybe other mailprograms).
LWN just had an article about this and the new option relatime. The
content is subscriber only until August 16st:

The problem might get self-solved until the next Debian release with
relatime. A patch implementing relatime can be found here:
