ok, verified this with an install of etch (kde iso), i just hit a few
times enter in non-export mode.. the result is the same: kde does *not*
care about the wallpaper or the splash screen.
the alternatives are the same as in the live cds. i think there is
something broken. did someone test this prior etch release?
