If the filenames of the official/branding artwork desktop-base or
some replacement thereof ships are well known, it should be no problem.
Askign the desktop-base maintainer to review or implement DE-specific
patches he has no understanding of might not be the best way, IMHO.
Though maybe for etch it is unevitable due to the time restraints.
