Same for me on pure Sarge with an NVIDIA FX5200.
On start up I only get some text mode messages "Boot process 10%..." 
and so on. On shutdown I get the boot image, but too small, not 102x768
I added a vga=xxx option to my grub configuration, setting VESA frame 
buffer resolution to 1024x768, but it doesn't help.
