Yes, maybe it would be a good idea to post a list.
(see below, no particular order, please add if you know more)
One thing to keep in mind I think is to not look at it solely as a control
center candy but also as important general configuration management
interface.
Ease of maintainabilty flexibility and extendability are also importand since
those seemed to be major reasons older tools have not spread too much in the
past.
So lets have a start gathering some criteria:
- mudularity and interfaces (what to code to configure somthing new?
parser, app-config logic, toolkit, frontend)
- should never assume to be in sole control of a config
- should keep all comments, formating etc.
- should not have to give up if config has been changed by other means.
- should not have to give up if a new or unknown setting is found.
And posible candidats:
-- Gnome System Tools

-- Morphix Control Panel

-- CFG (Config4GNU)
http://www.freedesktop.org/Software/CFG
-- configlets
http://platform.progeny.com/configlets
-- gkdebconf
-- linuxconf
http://www.solucorp.qc.ca/linuxconf
-- webmin

-- yast
-- guitoo
