I've sent a followup to #945824 with two versions of a non-trivial but
reasonably simple change that improves the situation. One is conservative
and shouldn't need ongoing maintenance, the other has a smaller diffstat
but has to make some assumptions which could conceivably become false
in future. Hopefully one or the other will be considered suitable.
Please take any further discussion of those proposed changes to #945824.
The changes I proposed in #945824 were prepared in my role as an ordinary
Debian developer and do not reflect a position of the TC.
