This option is obviously incompatible with the request to restore
util-linux' rename. I think we have pretty wide consensus that we do not
want this option.

I've checked back with the perl people and with other ctte members.
Consensus is that we do not want to "finish" this transition. We expect
that /usr/bin/rename only has the perl API on Debian systems.

Do you see any other options or compromises that you'd be comfortable
with?

At this point, it is very clear that we will be unable to reconcile the
position of the submitter (provide util-linux' rename somewhere), the
position of the perl rename maintainers (retain perl API for
/usr/bin/rename) and your stated position (option A or option B). One of
these will have to move and we think it needs to be yours.
