If the Technical Committee welcome that, I'll be happy to take the
burden of verifying (publicly, and on -python) who would be willing, at
present, to be part of an alternative Python maintenance team.

Even though I'm merely a lurker of the -python list, I'm positive the
mailing list participants will be able to reach consensus (modulo the
potential objection of the current maintainer) on a suitable maintenance
team for the purpose of being included in the tech-ctte ballot. I think
that can be done in the time frame mentioned by Russ for the vote.
