Steve's point was not in support of python-central, but rather in support
of the new helper process.  I'm inclined to agree that, given the people
working on the new helper system, resolution of this bug one way or the
other is unlikely to derail it, but I think you're not seeing his point
and reacting to something else.

And all that happened without replacing the maintainer of Python.  It
didn't happen anywhere nearly as smoothly as it could, but I think the
point is that Matthias is not blocking forward progress here, so changing
maintainers doesn't seem to be required to continue to make progress.
