I agree. The "web of trust" is nice, but many customers want to see
something "on the wall" which proclaims "I can take your money for this
job, and I have backing to prove it." Actually, certification does much
more than that, and is something which I think is important for the Linux
community to look into. I am not saying that there are not excellent
un-certified consultants (I am expert at many things I'm not certified in
for sure), but we have lost jobs we were qualified for b/c the customer
had a certification level requirement. And again, I can't stress enough
the need for customers to sign onto a maintenance contract backed by a
company which has all the trappings of professionalism and culpability.

A certification program would go a long way (as has Caldera's $300
price tag for Linux, too bad they need so much work on the distribution)
toward improving Linux's image to businesses. Ultimately I would like
to see Oracle, Sybase, Tivoli, etc. port their apps to Linux. I would
love to see all of the Fortune 500 able to _ADMIT_ to using Linux
publicly. But they can't do so until there are companies willing to
support them and to provide all of the necessary items to make the MIS
managers stop sweating and swearing all the time. Of course Linux is
going to be a scapegoat if their are interoperability problems in a mixed
environment. There is no one standing up for Linux and proclaiming: "No,
it wasn't us!" at the top of their white-papered lungs. In order to
really penetrate beyond the doors of geek-dom and tech-central jobs (into
things like retail, advertising, and the non-technical like), Linux
needs to have the same suit-clad knights arguing its superiority. Wired
magazine went a long way toward this in August 1997, but it's not enough.
In order to win the game that has been going on since the 60s, Linux and
Debian are going to need to play by the same rules to some extent.

Certification is a step in the right direction . . .
