The nice thing of smartd+some-notifyer over g-d-u would be that it's
probably much more flexible than the (presumably in the end
libatasmart-based) gnome-disk-utility.

Also, for smartmontools I'd know that it's pretty much kept up to date
with current disk models and quirks for them... not idea whether or not
libatasmart is as properly maintained as well.
