Thank you for your comments / effort.
It seemed I wasn't the only one to have seen this issue - and I remember reading that it was fixed upstream somewhere, but there was no dates I could find for when that update would hit the debian repos. So I tried out Linux Mint - there was no problem in the version shipped with that, and so I chose to stick with Mint - as the only two apps I really use are browser (firefox) and file explorer (nemo) - so Mint made sense in that it was a newer version of both.

You wasn't the only, also I had this issue with older cinnamon and I hadn't anymore with cinnamon 3.4 and 3.6 I used in latest year.
The issue is 99.9% solved in 3.4.2 with the commit added in the testing build I did for stable but I was unable to reproduce it on fast test on Stretch vm I did.
I wrote to trying to have confirm from others that had the issue and if confirmed request to put the build with fix as proposed update for stable.

users out of here.
I prepared Stretch vm and tried to reproduce it without success,
probably because I tried only with few small images.
Anyway I prepared a test packages with patch that should solves the issue:
wget -O - http://debomatic.fantu.eu/fantutestingrepo.gpg.key | sudo
apt-key add -
#add repository to /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://debomatic.fantu.eu/deb stretch main contrib non-free
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

If you want test it please report if solves or not the issues reported here.
