With *a lot* of help from waldi, textshell and aurel32 on #debian-release, I was able to at least get the host running again.
The old initramfs still works, so once I discovered I had a typo in "#cp vi vmsg 2", it worked to start the old kernel. However, there was no networking so I had to "hwup ccw 0.0.0340" and "ifup enc340" to get ssh again. Because I didn't have the root password, I first had to interrupt the boot and set a password from there.
So, now there's all kind of stuff to figure out. What's broken, maybe s390-tools?How to ensure the system remains working? (I added a bookworm entry to the boot menu, I hope that the working initramfs that I copied will not be changed by anything.)
