According to "ss" there is an open connection to the AMQP broker, so it shouldn't be the firewall either. The connection sometimes breaks with an SSL error (as found in journalctl) but then the queue listener is promptly restarted.
One thing went missing in the multiple refactorings of the mail as I learned more: lxc-net is currently in a failed state in systemd but the logs expired. So I'm not sure if things would work if the worker binary would properly get a request.
