Thanks, Anthony, this is very useful.  In my fonts.alias file I made an
alias "-gnu-song-medium-r-normal--24-240-72-72-c-240-gb2312.1980-1" that
points to "-gnu-song-medium-r-normal--24-240-72-72-c-240-gbk-0" (note the
"1" at the end of the former, for GR "graphic right"), and now I can
use it in cxtermgb and other "legacy" programs (instead of the tiny 16x16
fonts, or the larger ones that had thick strokes).

However, I can't figure out how to convince Netscape to use it for
"Simplified Chinese"--while I can set it up as a font for
"Simplified Chinese (x-gb2312-11)" instead of "Simplified Chinese
(gb_2312-80), it seems to always draw upon the font specified for
"Simplified Chinese (gb_2312-80)" for display.  I looked in Netscape.ad
(/usr/lib/netscape/472/communicator/Netscape.ad), but there didn't seem
to be anything I could do to it.  (A parallel situation exists between
GL and GR fonts for Korean--there are a "Korean (ks_c_5601-1987)" and
and a "Korean (x-ksc5601-11)" choices, but only the font specified
for the former is used for display.  It seems that GR fonts are not
liked.)  Converting the font to a GL one isn't an option, as GBK's
foundation are the GR codepoints...
