that's wrong, I have been using Sylpheed(the official one) for a
long time, nevery meet such problems. maybe it is your configurations
problem of :

1) GTK (< 2.0)
2) Sylpheed
3) XIM (environment variable)
4) input method (i'm using SCIM)
