dpkg --get-selections packagename > filename
# then update filename packages status to hold
dpkg --set-selections < filename

|| new package that is very nice ( IMHO )
wajig hold packagename

wajig is the wrapper for all the admin tool you
use all day.... /etc/init.d/*, apt-cache, apt-get
dpkg, dselect ....
basically all in one, I like it a lot.
