1. What version of glibc? 2.1.3 or 2.2? If the latter, did you
edit /etc/locale.gen and run locale-gen?
2. Did you install the appropriate Chinese packages, including fonts, etc.?
3. Did KDE2 mess up the .Xresources settings?
4. What does
xlsfonts -fn "*-big5-0"
say? In particular, can your system find fonts like:
-eten-fixed-medium-r-normal--16-150-75-75-c-160-big5-0
-default-ming-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-c-0-big5-0
-arphic-ar pl mingti2l big5-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-c-0-big5-0
5. Check your /etc/gtk/gtkrc.zh_TW.big5 or gtkrc.zh_TW.Big5
or ~/.gtkrc.zh_TW*
