New Debian i386 Packages

These i386 packages were installed into the Debian hierarchy in the
last week:

samba (1.9.17p2-0.0) stable unstable; urgency=high
  * Non-maintainer release.
  * Upgraded source package for security fix (buffer overrun in
    passwd checking)
  * changed "readonly = no" to "readonly = yes" in the smb.conf file
    supplied with samba.
  * start-stop-daemon seems to return error if asked to stop a non-running
    daemon. As samba usually runs from inetd, this is usually the case.
    Added "|| true" to the prerm script with "start-stop-daemon" lines.
  * Added  "#ifndef __GLIBC__ around  #endif"#include <asm/signal.h>" in source/includes.h line 218".
  * changed "#ifdef GLIBC2" "#ifdef __GLIBC__", in source/includes
  * then I noticed samba depends on libpam that still is libc5, so
    let's dump trying to make a glibc version, and just go for the libc5
    one.

  * Linked with glibc6 and liblockdev0g
  * Added string variables support to dial command (undocumented)
  * Added use of locking library libdevlock.
  * Added patch for alpha contributed by Suse gmbh.
  * Added debian version information to startup message.
  * Changed version name and date in manpage.
  * Changed the way that tty_getmode() return its value; now dip removes
     its lock file. Thanx to Peter Tobias for the hint.
  * addedd more sample files and more README to the package.
  * Should work with and without shadow password.
  * Compared manually all patches applyed to version 3.3.7o with the
    new version 3.3.7p, and applyed differencies.
  * Added patches already in previous debian version: support for
     adaptive mode, assembler code for mc68000, for FSSTND compliant
     (var/run), ... some old bug, and some new :-)
    Here is a list of the Debian changes in previous version 3.3.7o:
   - transparent SHADOW support (the same binary will work with and
     without shadow support)
   - removed -m486 (it is not necessary and it doesn't work on non
     intel platforms)
   - additional configuration option FSSTND (place of pid file)
   - removed -Wl,-qmagic (not supported anymore)
   - added a BASEDIR variable. If unset nothing changes but you
     can install now to a separate hierarchy. You could set it
     to /tmp and say "make install" and create a tar archive with
     the binaries (great for distributions)
   - in attach.c changed "#ifndef old_ifr_hwaddr" to
     "#ifdef old_ifr_hwaddr" (the kernel doesn't define it anymore)
   - changed dip to use ipfwadm instead of ipfw (ipfw isn't currently
     supported by linux)
   - fixed reading from /proc
   - ignore comments after labels in the dip script
   - added assembler ip checksum routines for m68k
   - added support for SLIP6 (some users wanted it)
   - added an "adaptive SLIP mode" (AUTO). Great for diplogin. You
     don't need to specify SLIP or CSLIP in /etc/diphosts anymore.
     Just say "AUTO" and the same entry will work for both SLIP
     and CSLIP. You now only need one entry for both SLIP and CSLIP.
   - added a section about escape characters to the manual page
     (they weren't documented)
   - always enable IP-accounting (maybe supress output when the
     counters are 0??)
   - make sure that the modem init string is terminated by a \0
   - added a prehangup function that will make sure that the modem
     will hangup.
  * upstream package wasn't clean; cleaned debian .orig sources
    here are md5sum from upstream and my cleaned:
    2fc3c9723a4a8ab506d5fde85d6e2f63 188381 dip-3.3.7p.tar.gz

    some settings.
  * Added README.debian from experimental.
  * Fixed cleanup in preinst (really remove obsolete script from /etc/init.d/).
  * Patch from experimental : suppressed inclusion of <linux/termios.h> in

  * Changes to kbdconfig:
  * Added -u option to "resize" call (#13386).

     Note that this dir is not used by any `kbd_0.94-?'.
  * Fixed test whether showkey accepts --keymap option (doesn't in any
     `kbd_0.94-?' - does in experimental).
  * Tell why keymap can't be tested when showkey lacks --keymap option.

kernel-package - Debian Linux kernel package build scripts.
kernel-package 3.40 -> 3.41 into hamm/hamm/binary-all/misc
kernel-package (3.41) unstable; urgency=low
  * Handle obsolete /System.map and /System.old links left around by older
    kernel-package packages. All the programs that look at the information
    in the map files (including top, ps, and klogd) also will look at
    /boot/System.map-<version>, we just need to ensure that that file is
    present, and no longer require the symbolic link.
    Actually, having the sumbolic link in / is technically detrimental
    (apart from cluttering up /); many programs, though looking in /boot,
    stll allow /Sytem.map to override. If you use LILO to choose between
    multiple kernels, then the /System.map symbolic link only applies to
    one such kernel, for all other choices the symbols loaded will be
    wrong. Not having the symbolic links at all prevents this.
    Therefore, the new image.postinst file shall offer to remove the
    symbolic links in /. This should fix BUG#13359

knews - Graphical threaded news reader
knews 0.9.8-8 -> 0.9.8-9 into hamm/non-free/binary-i386/news

l3 (2.71-1) non-free; urgency=low
  * new 2.71 release
  * debian/rules changed

less - A file pager program, similar to more(1)
less 332-1 -> 332-2 into hamm/hamm/binary-i386/text
less (332-2) unstable; urgency=low
  * Quote the arguments to lesspipe so that it can handle filenames with
    special characters such as '#'. Suggestion from Richard Braakman.
    Thanks, Richard!  (Bug #11859)
  * Recompile with libc6.  (Bug #11695)
  * Use update-alternatives to register less(1) as /usr/bin/pager at level
    77.  (Bug #12474)
  * Told less(1) to use /usr/bin/editor if the envar EDITOR isn't set.
    Changed defines.h.in to not redefine EDIT_PGM and removed checking the
    VISUAL envar for the program to use.
  * Register bug on less since it should depend on -something- installing
    /usr/bin/editor but nothing I've seen does yet.

  * debian/control: add conflicts for xlib6g, xlib6g-dev [david].
    Add xprt package.
  * debian/create-arch-xprt: new, based on create-arch-xnest, generates
    the xprt package with the X Print Server.
  * debian/create-arch-xslib5: use /usr/arch-linuxlibc1/lib [david].
  * debian/create-arch-xdevel5: add comments; drop .so links into
    /usr/arch-linuxlibc1/lib where they belong [david].
    Fix location of target includes. [#13018]
  * debian/create-arch-xlib5: doesn't need /usr/arch-linuxlibc1 at all, so
    don't create them.
  * debian/xserver-wrapper.c: drop privileges on alternate -config, even
    if we do pass the security check, to prevent using the error handling
    to read the first line of any protected file.
  * debian/control: xmanpages should recommend xlib6g-dev [#13037]
  * debian/rules: copy site.def.l5 into libc5 tree [#13018]
  * site.def.l5: site.def with ProjectRoot hard coded to /usr/i486-linuxlibc1.
    This shouldn't be a cross-build problem, as I'm pretty sure only the
    x86 targets even use libc1 at all (though there still needs to be a
    way to notice this from debian/rules, it's an easy enough hand-patch
    to get a build working.) [#13018]
  * debian/create-arch-xslib5, debian/create-arch-xlib5,
    debian/create-arch-xdevel5: with the right site.def, all the files get
    dropped in xtree5 in the right place, so we don't need to move them,
    just copy them.

The Perl5 Database Interface by Tim Bunce
This DBI interface is not yet fully specified. The current development
work is focused on writing drivers, such as DBD::Oracle, which also
implement emulations of old perl4 database interfaces, e.g., oraperl.
This strategy enables the DBI and drivers to serve a useful purpose
whilst allowing the real interface to evolve with experience behind the
emulation interface.
