kernel make deb fails

I have installed the kernel source, and when i get to teh stage where i
should make deb ; make clean  i get the following error,

root@futura [/usr/src/linux]: make deb
make: *** No rule to make target `deb'.  Stop.
root@futura [/usr/src/linux]: 

what have i missed?
