Just a few basic questions:

Why doesn't the CD team maintain a stable release? What does it rely on

This is a very common management technique - "division of labor."

What is the difference between the following files?
bootbf2_4_iso.zip
bootcompact_iso.zip
bootidepci_iso.zip
bootvanilla_iso.zip

These "kernels" were compiled with different options which someone argued for.
Eg ..a 2.4 series kernel instead of a 2.2 series; idepci contains no SCSI stuff, etc.
Read the instructions.

Why does the site recommend using CD-RWs instead of CD-Rs?

It just seems wasteful ... to consume 65 CD-Rs a month instead of 14 CD-RWs over a year or two.
(I've switched to DVD+RWs myself.)
