Hi,

Linux is totally new for me, and I am trying to download a copy of it and install on my computer. As I went into the download mirrors, I found there were up to 20 files, and each of them has the size of a CD.

Do I have to download them all?

No ... only the ones you need.

I would really appreciate it, if you could please give me a few pointers, on which files to download, and where to start.

I'd suggest starting at www.debian.org and looking for the installation instructions. You'll know how Debian identifies suitable software for your hardware .. ie ... IBM, Mac, PowerPC, MIPS, etc... and anything peculiar to a given hardware ... IIRC Sun and Mac start Linux from a native system where an IBM boots and
a MIPS needs a "boot server".

Then you'll figure out if you need a "special flavor" because of your hardware - ie SCSI, vanilla, or whatever,
and what release you need - experiment, test, stable, or "legacy."

Then, of course, what kind of install you want to do and what kind of install resource you have.

Last time I looked, I saw 90 CDs from Debian. I'd recommend attending an installfest..YMMV
