That's a well known problem. Please compare Bug #198265,
http://lists.debian.org/debian-cd/2003/debian-cd-200306/msg00049.html and
http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2003/debian-boot-200306/msg00272.html.

I tried the same and failed.

You need only the first CD to install the base system. IIRC the bug in
Packages.gz should be related to .udeb's only. I know that apt-cdrom adds
debian-installer modules to /etc/apt/sources.list, I suggest you remove
these paths from this file.

I do not know a better solution.
A workaround may be installing all required .udeb's manually. There is a
tool (I do not remember the program name, but it is similar to "udpk")
which can be used to do this and to install these packages into the
ramdisk. But please note that you have to care about dependencies, install
in the right order!
But that's related to the base install only and you have to do this only
once!

This should not happen. Please try
dpkg-reconfigure xfree86-common
this creates the config file for you. Install the metapackage
x-window-system to obtain all necessary packages.
(aptitude is my preferred package management system, try it).

If you use German locale than it's very important to install
xfonts-100dpi-transcoded and xfonts-75dpi-transcoded too. Otherwise X will
terminate without any warning or error (happens to me in Woody, I'm not
sure about Sarge).
