Rsync from 2.2r3 ISO to 2.2r4 ISO works well

I updated all three of the binary 2.2r3 ISO images with rsync without using the
pseudo-image kit.

  binary-i386-1_NONUS.iso
  binary-i386-2.iso
  binary-i386-3.iso

Here's how it went.

I have a fairly fast link, specified as 768Kbaud DSL up and down. I often
obtain over 100 Kbytes/sec. rsync block size was 8192 for all.

CD 1 took about six hours. It was fairly slow. I was getting about 15 Kbytes/
sec or less. I attribute this to

    1. lots of updates on first CD.
    2. largest of the CDs.
    3. congestion along the network path or server contention.

CD 2 was less than three hours. 25 Kbytes/sec or more.

CD 3 flew, a little over an hour. I didn't get a look at my meter. This image
is much smaller than the first two. But this went much faster even after
accounting for size. There must be far fewer updated packages on CD 3.

This was well worth the experiment. The general rule of thumb should be that
if you do not have a local mirror but have the previous version of the ISO
images, dispense with the pseudo image kit and update them with rsync.

Arne
