I experienced the same thing, but when I renamed the pseudo-image to
binary-i386-1_NONUS.iso and rsync-ed it I got the correct iso-image (I
checked the md5sum and it matched with the one from
http://cdimage.debian.org/cd-images/2.2_rev3/i386/.)

I don't make my mistakes more than once. I store them carefully and after
some time I take them out again, add some new features and _reuse_ them.
