Well, www.uk.debian.org does work with this:

deb http://www.uk.debian.org/debian potato main contrib non-US/main non-US/contrib

but you're mostly right.

exactly right --- using the code name for HTTP access means that you
preserve the benefit of going through a squid cache when the
distribution changes status.
