I think it would be a good idea. Let me know where it goes so I can

I'm not saying put it in the root directory. I'm saying that you have
the /doc area, and you have the Installation Manual, which is in
the /install area. The Installation Manual, I was proposing, and it's
not a big deal, should have symlinks from /doc . Maybe having a
symlink dir, /doc/install -> ../install would be better?

Exactly. You are safe if you copy *.html and *.txt.
