I'm leaving this issue for someone else to try first to see what might be going wrong. Perhaps try: # apt-get -o APT::Install-Recommends=true task-desktop # apt-get -o APT::Install-Recommends=true task-xfce-desktop in sid on linux vs. kfreebsd, to see which packages it would try to install. Try some of the APT debug flags: -o Debug::pkgDepCache::AutoInstall=yes -o Debug::pkgProblemResolver=yes Perhaps look up those tasks on http://packages.debian.org and check installability of task-xfce-desktop in particular, maybe using the edos-distcheck tool or reviewing https://qa.debian.org/dose/ I'll probably check on this bug before d-i Beta 3 in case it hasn't been figured out by then.
