syslog showed the following:

Aug 29 23:30:06 sepulveda nfsd[63343]: Can't open /var/db/nfs-stablerestart

upon googling, the answer can be found here: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-current/2010-September/019831.html

I created the file manually, and now NFS starts fine.
