I agree...

And FWIW I recently found it extremely useful that there was a
kfreebsd-8 kernel option in the installer.

I saw that kfreebsd-9 would crash as a Xen domU while booting but
kfreebsd-8 was unaffected.  That allowed me to narrow it down to the
Xen-provided HPET device (perhaps just a limitation, but could be a
FreeBSD kernel bug);  after disabling it both kernels worked fine.

For the record (in case this happens to anyone else), that was Xen 4.1.2
using the example HVM configuration on a NetBSD 6.0 BETA 2 dom0.
