Trying that I get a Geom Error with GRUB trying to boot the 8 GB da0 (virtual disk inside VMware ESXi). It's one partition only and the update-grub needed to be convinced with "ln -s /target/boot/grub/core.img /target/boot/" to actually run all the way through.
