I have often the same problems.
Please try the (very old) images:
http://glibc-bsd.alioth.debian.org/install-cd/kfreebsd-i386/20090729/
http://glibc-bsd.alioth.debian.org/install-cd/kfreebsd-amd64/20090729/
They work for me with VirtualBox (2.x and 3.x).

This is a good idea! Installation on real hardware is more difficult.
