Yes, this is a problem with VMWare SCSI Disks.
Did you try it with an IDE disk?
It should work with a VMWare IDE Disk.
I think it´s a problem with the debian-installer for kfreebsd and SCSI disks. Some older daily images are working with VMware SCSI Disks.
