The new dpkg changes the debian names of the various systems in /usr/share/dpkg/ostable. Which means that no type-handling doesn't do what's documented anymore. For example ``type-handling any linux-gnu'' outputs an empty string instead of the arch list as should be (and as shown inthe manpage)
The patch bellow together with Depends on dpkg-dev (>= 1.14.0) should provide reasonable backward compatible results.
